Photography long reads: Oct 2020

A roundup of good reads, immersive exhibitions and must-watch videos for those of us wanting something with a bit more depth than the usual click-bait fluff.

Stuart Humphryes aka Babel Colour

Stuart restores old photographs (amongst other things). He is not a “colouriser” – someone who adds colour to old black and white photos. Instead he enhances the colour that is already in faded original colour photos. His restorations bring the past to life in a captivating and addictive fashion. Follow him on Instagram

Fay Godwin

This interview has been recommended to me by three different photographers this month. It is a masterclass in shooting for your own fulfilment rather than to conform to what other people think is the “correct” way to photograph. If you are not confident to follow your heart, if you love landscapes or if (like me) you are left-eye dominant, watch and enjoy:

Black Chronicles with Autograph

Black Chronicles is an exhibition exploring black presences in 19th and early 20th-century, through British studio portraiture. Watch the video below for some background. See the images here and here.

Street photography with Matt Badenoch

If you were inspired by Peter Merry’s Street Photography for Beginners post last week, take a few minutes and explore this virtual exhibition which includes a brief commentary from Matt with some background on his process. You need to scroll to half-way down the page to find the 3D exhibition:
