All change at AYWMC
January 2021 heralds a big change here at A Year With My Camera: we have moved our community from Facebook to our private app (for more on the reasons read this post: Goodbye Facebook?).
This blog posts lists the changes that community members will need to be aware of.
1. Free online photography lessons
The A Year With My Camera lessons will always be free of charge via email - nothing has changed here.
2. The community is now on our app
To join the AYWMC community you will need to download the private app from your app store (available for Apple and Android). Currently it costs £4.99 for a year’s subscription. For this you get:
immediate access to all the lessons (you don’t need to wait for the emails each week)
a moderated place to share your images and ask for help with no third party ads and nobody tracking you
access to many special interest groups including nature, macro, flowers and landscape photography, and during the pandemic, a dedicated lockdown support group
extra weekly photo challenges
the opportunity to meet like-minded photographers to help you through your year with your camera
Note that existing AYWMC meetup and start-date groups will stay on Facebook, as will the official AYWMC business page.
3. Start at any time
When we ran the community in Facebook groups we needed to have “start dates” so that everybody set off at the same time and worked through the course at the same pace. Without this system the feed would have become utterly unmanageable.
Now we have a private app we are able to arrange the groups by lesson rather than by start date. The final group start date will be 7 January and after this anyone joining will simply start with the first lesson when they are ready. We think this is going to be a big improvement for the community. Previously people had to wait up to 2 months to start if they just missed the previous start. It will also be a lot easier for members who can’t commit to the one-a-week lesson: in future you can simply work at your own pace and post your homework photos when you are ready.
