3 colour tips for photographers

In last week’s post we looked at why colour is important to photographers.

This week we have three quick tips to start using colour effectively:

1. Impact

Make your photograph stand out from the crowd (or the Instagram feed) by using saturated colours. Use clashing colours to make a bold statement. Use a more organised rainbow palette to be easier on your viewer.

2. Mood

Tailor your photograph to suit the mood you want by using colours appropriately:

Red = love, power, anger

Blue = reliable, corporate

Green = natural, eco-friendly

Yellow = cheerful, inexpensive

Orange = warm, exciting, safe

Purple = royal, sophisticated

3. Emphasis

Draw attention to your subject with the use of a contrasting colour. Using colour like this is a common way to achieve background separation.
