Photography long reads: Jan 2021
Four interesting photography links that Emma has curated this month – settle in with a coffee and enjoy. If you are inspired to pick up your camera and go back to basics, join her year-long photography class here (the email version is free)
NPG’s Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize
In a normal year you’d need to travel to London to view the finalists from this competition. In pandemic times you can walk around it from the comfort of your own home:
Photographing snowflakes
Read about the pioneer of snowflake photography, Wilson Bentley. Back in the 1880s he set about cataloguing the unique crystals and took more than 5,000 over his lifetime. If you want to try it you’ll need to catch your snowflake on something dark, work in sub-zero temperatures and use a macro lens or many extension tubes held firm on a tripod.
The British Culture Archive
This is a non-profit organisation set up “to document, highlight and preserve the changes in British culture and society through documentary photography”. Take a look at one of my favourites, Tish Murtha’s “Kids Jumping onto Mattresses” – there is so much going on in this photo.
The People’s Archive, a sub section of the project, is a crowdsourced archive spanning the twentieth century. Relive your youth and follow links on the page to submit your own photos.
Masters of Photography
MoP started an online photography show during the first lockdown. There are six freestreams available to watch at the moment: click to view
